The WISE Program at Woodlands has flourished over the years:
  • Total # WISE Years: 42
  • Estimated Total # WISE Alumni: 3500
  • # High School Seniors This Year: 100-120 students
  • Expected Enrollment This Year: 60+ students
  • Low Years: 1/3 of senior class (40 students)
  • High Years: 2/3 of senior class (80-100 students)

Wesley Duru is currently a senior and WISE Student Coordinator at Woodlands High School.  With his outgoing personality, Wesley is a big advocate for WISE. Here's the beginning of his journey and why he believes in the program.  

 

Within his project he is working with an ALS nonprofit that hopes to build an ALS hospice center in Westchester and eventually throughout the United States.

Behind the Scenes of the WISE Program at Woodlands
   
The success of the WISE Program at Woodlands would not be possible without the hard work and support of their WISE team. Read more about Woodlands's WISE Co-Coordinators, staff, students, and alumni:
  1. Preparing Freshman for a Future in WISE: WISE Co-Coordinator Shehnaz Hirji collaborated to create an English WISE 9 course to introduce freshman to WISE.
     
  2. WISE Words from Dr. A: WISE Co-Coordinator Constantine Andreadis shares what WISE means to him.
     
  3. Alumna Success Story: Nicole Sharpe's WISE journey in 1988 gave her the fundraising experience that inspired her career in nonprofit management and philanthropy.
     
  4. Governing a WISE Program: Woodlands's WISE Steering Committee was revitalized two years ago in order to make meetings more accessible to students, teachers, and staff.
     
  5. From WISE Student to WISE School Staff: Elizabeth Huber continues to be a part of the WISE family at Woodlands.
     
  6. A WISE Supporter: "I was trained to assist," said Ellen Peifer, a Teaching Assistant at Woodlands. "I really enjoy working with the WISE students at Woodlands."

Vic Leviatin Honored and Interviewed  

 



Congratulations to WISE Founder Vic Leviatin, who will be honored as Board Member of the Year by the Association of Development Officers on March 11, 2015.

Q: What is a "WISE student"?

A: That's a good question, a difficult question. The WISE student is not set in his or her ways but is open to new direction. A good potential WISE student is excited about opportunities to grow, expand, and explore. This is the natural inclination at that age that is stifled in many high schools.

 

Q: What does Woodlands mean to you?

A: I liked how you phrased the question with "mean," not "meant." There is a subculture in education of cutting the cord when teachers retire, but that is one of the worst things. Woodlands means to me an opportunity to stay engaged with people who are in transition into adulthood.
